Missouri uninsured motorist report
Missouri law, since 1987, has required vehicle owners and drivers to carry minimum liability coverage of $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 for bodily injury per accident and $10,000 for property damage they cause.
Effective Jan. 1, 1998, a new law required Missouri vehicle owners, for the first time, to show proof of insurance before the Department of Revenue would issue or renew license plates. The new statutes also allowed police to issue criminal citations to drivers of uninsured vehicles. Owners of uninsured cars who refused to buy mandatory liability insurance coverage were forced to retire those vehicles or resort to extralegal means, such as driving with expired plates or theft of license plates.
In 1999 and 2000 more laws were passed in an effort to get every vehicle insured with at least the minimum liability requirements. The new law gave the Department of Revenue the ability to set up an uninsured motorist database to track drivers and vehicle owners who do not keep automobile liability insurance in force. Those who let their coverage lapse will be subject to suspension of driver's license and vehicle registration.
