Financial Examination Section
The Financial Examination Section enforces the standards set by Missouri statutes and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
The insurance director can call for an examination of licensed insurers whenever necessary. The Financial Examination Section works with financial analysts to determine each company’s examination priority, although the department examines most of Missouri's 257 domestic insurance companies at least every three years (except Missouri's 123 county or farm mutuals, which are on a five-year schedule).
The chief examiner sets schedules for all examinations with the support of an assistant chief examiner and two audit managers. The financial examiners follow generally recognized examination procedures under Missouri and NAIC standards. Examination findings are set forth in a report filed by the director as a public document and now available on the Internet. If statutes or regulations are violated, the division acts to assure that the company complies and continues to do so.
A separate fund pays for the cost of examinations, including examiner salaries. The companies examined reimburse the fund for costs.
